Our future

The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home has always prided itself on its pioneering and forward thinking approach to not only multi-disciplinary care but in the management and maintenance of the organisation itself. As a result of this core ethos we find ourselves in a very strong position in a current climate where other hospital care homes are struggling to keep their heads above water.

On the 2nd February 2006 HRH Princess Alexandra (the Hon. Lady Ogilvy) officially opened the new Alexandra Ward of the hospital. The Alexandra Ward provides 22 single occupancy en-suite bedrooms as well as spacious room for the physiotherapy, occupational therapy departments and the social 'orangery' room.

All the bedrooms feature state-of-the-art overhead gantry systems and en-suite bathrooms. The bathroom consist of specially design toilets and sinks that are adjustable to enable tailoring to specific residents needs. The residents living in the Alexandra Ward free to make the rooms their own and many put up pictures, have their own television sets and computers.

Our vision for the future is to continue in our provision of multi-disciplinary healthcare and to secure new funding enabling costs to be reduced. It is vitally important that the charity receives input and support from staff, residents, families, corporations and the newly recruited fundraising team are working hard to make sure this vision comes to life.

Future Plans
Our immediate concern to provide high quality support to our residents and their families. However as funding allows we will progress our plans to enhance the older parts of our hospital home. As our residents represent the need for end of life care, and for twenty-four hour nursing for multiple and complex health needs accompanied by extreme disability, our premises must keep pace with both need and legislative requirements.  In due course we will replace existing provision with up to date beds and wards, lifting gear, bathrooms and high-specification equipment.

Other factors affect our plans. The central tenet of our purpose (to provide nursing care for disabled ex-Service Men) remains the same as when QAHH was founded. However, in other respects much has altered as we respond to the changing needs and expectations of ex-Service personnel. For example, we are preparing to meet the needs of younger people, who may have served in recent or current conflicts, and we have recently opened our doors to ex-Service Women, changes made possible by the opening in autumn 2005 of a new annexe. This building will provide 22 en-suite rooms, state-of-the-art physiotherapy and occupational therapy facilities and, we believe, will appeal to younger residents and women.

The last few years has also, sadly, seen an increase in the numbers of ex-Service personnel referred to QAHH suffering from an Acquired Brain Injury. This may be the result of a stroke, a tumor or an accident. Advances in medical science mean that more people survive such events, but are left with severe disabilities. Our specialist facilities and highly trained staff can offer expertly integrated treatments and therapies tailored to individual needs. Many of those who require such treatment are younger people with the greater portion of their lives ahead of them. This makes our commitment to rehabilitation even more important; the Queen Alexandra Hospital Home is not just a place for people to receive nursing care – it is a place where residents make progress.
